Espresso: Peru Cajamarca El Paraiso

El Paraiso is a village in the Huabal district, aptly named "paradise" for its scenic location atop a small mountain with beautiful vistas in every direction at 2000 masl. Producers in this village primarily grow Caturra, Bourbon, and Catimor varieties, mixed together, with farms situated around the village center at altitudes between 1800 and 2050 masl.

The producers of El Paraiso grow wonderful coffee and have some of the most potential in the area, but for years they have been selling to intermediaries, receiving very low prices for their coffee. Additionally, local coyotes have been promoting Catimor, which certainly has its benefits but is not well-suited for the high altitudes of El Paraiso, where it produces little more than leaves as it is better adapted to lower altitudes.

Producers were also poorly advised about farm management, including pruning, and the use of chemical fertilizers and herbicides. However with the support of Falcon Coffee's field staff, we are working to address these issues to improve quality and increase production in this area, which we believe holds incredible potential and could produce some of the best coffees in all of Latin America.
