This coffee comes through the Caffenation Direct Trade Program. We usually buy Kenyas through Caffenation and this one is another great example of what good direct trading can do. Peaberries are mutations where instead of two the is just one bean in the cherry. It is more concentrated in flavour and this is why we love them so much. Think cranberries, cinnamon and sweetness!
The Gatina Washing Station is located a few kilometres outside the town of Karatina in Nyeri County. Constructed in 1968, it is nestled between the western slopes of Mt. Kenya and the eastern slopes of the Aberdares mountains. Managed by the Mugaga Farmers' Cooperative Society, the station currently processes cherries from 790 members, with over 30% (280 members) being women. The Gatina station accommodates 790 members who collectively cultivate 142 hectares. Family members predominantly handle farm labour, facilitating the adherence to speciality cultivation and picking methods. Additionally, numerous farmers engage in cultivating tea, maize, and legumes for sale in local markets, bolstering their supplementary income.Share
